Reading about Wordpress mu was exciting to me until I learned my Economy, shared Godaddy hosting plan wouldn’t support it. I guess you have to pay extra for the Deluxe plan, and a dedicated IP address or something like that.

There is still hope, though. Because all I want is a second blog (not the plethera that would necessitate the dedicated IP), I may yet be able to set it up. First, I upgraded my Wordpress to 2.8.4. My intention was to then install a second Wordpress directory for the new blog, and create a second database to facilitate it. However, now I seem to already have two blogs: one with all of the posts I had previously made in my first blog, but in the old WP version, and a second blog in WP 2.8.4 that looks a lot like my old blog, but with only about half of my posts. I’m wondering whether they’re both referring to the same database, so I’m writing this post to see whether it shows up in both, or just one blog.

Here’s hoping for the best.

In July, Mercantec added a feature to their free shopping cart that allows multiple types (e.g. sizes, colors, and therefore prices) for each item. I’m using this feature on Brad’s site to let customers distinguish between the types of files they want to purchase, whether they want a .jpg, a .gif, or something else. I still have much work to do on the back end, though. My goal is to use PHP to make it easy enough for Brad to scale up and update his site himself without having to learn a new language or two. I don’t expect to have much time in the next month, but maybe after two.

Have made progress on the bradgilsonphotography.com page. Images now are protected about as well as possible while still allowing users to browse the photos with enough resolution to give buyers a clear impression of the image they’re purchasing. Once Brad enables his Google Merchant account and makes it possible, I’ll add the buy now and checkout buttons that’ll complete the functionality of the site.

Am branching into the PHP side of things. Will need to ask Brad’s network administrator to enable server-side includes on his server for anything to work. My goal is to make Brad’s site scalable, and easily maintained by himself without him needing to learn XML or PHP.

Magiconthemountain.com is now maintained by me/OurLinkToYou, and is now hosted by Xmission. The donations page is functional, thanks to Pete Halverson, who transfered the site to me, and I’ve posted photos from the Draper Trails Day event in June.

Brad Gilson’s page is up at bradgilson.com, gilsonphotography.com, and bradgilsonphotography.com. It’s just a skeleton yet, but the thumbnails make it look great. Waiting for Brad to give me the copyright watermarked full-scale versions of his photos to post before I start the e-commerce functionality. Tried Google’s Checkout on a small gallery on my own page as a trial run. preparing to set up Brad’s. The merchant partner I chose, Mercantec, doesn’t support multiple attributes per item, though. I’ll have to try something else. Google’s buy now button does allow for multiple attributes per item (and, therefore, multiple prices for that item), however, I still want customers to be able to make more than one purchases at a time, and modify shipping costs accordingly. Am hoping google has another free merchant partner that’ll support everything Brad will need for his photograph sales. All in all, I’m pretty happy the site is up and running on his own server with no DNS problems.
